The History of Kombucha

While it is believed that kombucha tea was known as the “immortal health elixir” by the Chinese and was said to be consumed by various societies throughout Asia over the centuries, stories as to exactly where, and how long ago this natural beverage originated are many and varied.

Some of the older readers of this site may remember what was known as “kombucha drink” gaining popularity during the “hippie movement” of the 1960’s and 70’s, but having “gone off the radar” since that time, it is once again gaining popularity amongst the health-conscious as a replacement for coffee, soft drink and even alcohol!

The Benefits of Kombucha

As with any other fermented products, Kombucha tea contains a variety of goodies, that are not only unique to each batch of kombucha, but indeed every individual bottle.

Just like the SCOBY itself, once fermented, the sweet tea becomes a living thing and therefore varies and must be treated accordingly. Some of the amazing benefits that this living elixer gives us when consumed on a regular basis, are provided by the;

As there is very little scientific evidence out there about kombucha, many of the health benefits are simply anecdotal evidence, and while I haven’t seen some of the so-called benefits first hand, I have certainly seen and felt a variety of benefits.

So what do all these things with fancy names actually do for us?
Because when it all boils down to it, that’s what we want to know isn’t it!

As kombucha drink starts out as a tea, it not only provides us with the benefits of the tea that it contains, but many more. These include;

It “pre-digests” some of what the tea contains, therefore making the polyphenols, catechins and antioxidants more available for your body to utilize.

Aids digestion – By improving your overall gut health, your digestive system will thank you, and operate in a much more efficient manner.

Detoxifies the liver – which not only assists in balancing your mood, but is also said to help repair damaging effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Reduces desire for alcohol – While there is very little evidence or information out there about this, I have experienced and seen the amazing effects in terms of removing almost all desire for alcohol.. I know it sounds unlikely, but seriously, give it a go!

How much Kombucha Tea should I drink?

The reason for this website being called
www.your-gut-instinct.com
is because everyone is different, and it is up to each individual to trust their gut, follow their own tuition and do what is right for YOU!

In saying that, kombucha tea is just like exercise or a diet or any other area of your life…
If you expect to drink a glass of booch a day for a week and resolve all of your physical &/or mental health issues, then quite frankly, I'm not sure that kombucha is for you.

While it is a good idea to “ease into” kombucha tea, by gradually increasing the dose, stick with it and I assure you that you will feel and see the positive effects.

Oh, and just a little warning:
kombucha (which is also sometimes spelt kambucha) is quite tangy and while it soon becomes a very addictive flavour, it is quite different at first go.
Also, be careful when opening a bottle of booch, as it does contain living things, and they may just jump out at you!

We’d love to hear how this ancient living elixir effects you,
so why don’t you drop us a line!
